Oh how I love fall in the lowcountry.  The weather this morning made me want to roll in the leaves, carve pumpkins and eat goat cheese…wait, what does fall have to do with goats?  Lots according to Robert Stehling the famous chef at the Hominy Grill.  Here is what he has cooking next month:

The tiny wine bar Enoteca has been converted under new management to the Mini Bar.  I hope to test it out soon.  In the meantime here is what I know:

Business hours are:

• Monday through Thursday – 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
• Friday and Saturday – 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
• Sunday – Closed

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.  Thank you for your patience as I have been handed the reigns to our neighborhood’s weekly updates.

I intend to keep Ryan’s informative updates to the neighborhood going.  If you have any suggestions or comments for improvement on the weekly updates, I would be glad to receive them.

As has been the case the past two years, we will not be holding a full neighborhood meeting in July or August.  The meeting schedule is listed below:

Halloween 2012

For the past two years, the residents and businesses of Cannonborough Elliotborough have hosted a great family friendly Halloween event in Elliotborough Park.  There is currently an opportunity for any residents or businesses that may be interested in organizing the event this year to participate and continue the tradition.  If you have any interest in organizing the Cannonborough Elliotborough Halloween 2012 event, please respond to this email.

Elliotborough Community Garden Update (Submitted by Claire Xidis)

Hello Gardeners and Friends of the Elliotborough Community Garden- One of our gardeners had the idea that we should add little signs to our plots to help people understand the garden and to help curb theft – e.g. signs that identify the plot as a particular person’s or family’s plot – e.g. “Liz and Reid’s Garden”  etc….another gardener said we really needed to have a garden pot luck…Meanwhile, one of our corporate partners, the lower King Street Starbucks, is going to start some regular volunteer days in the garden, so they will be in the garden next Thursday evening… So… next THURSDAY, JULY 26th at 6:00 we are going to have a painting and potluck party in the garden! Please let me know what you can bring -  we will have a pot-luck style supper.   (if you aren’t into cooking, we need some folks to bring things like paper plates and drinks too).  And please feel free to invite friends and neighbors. If anyone has a grill they can bring, please let me know.  If anyone has an old/used grill they would like to donate to the garden, that would be great…. we can use it and store it in the building for future events. Also… I finally created a facebook page for the garden!  I’ve been putting up some history of the garden and posting lots of photos.  Please post things here about your gardening experience- we can use to keep each other up to date on what we are doing/seeing/experiencing in the garden.  Go to facebook and search for “elliotborough community garden”  to check it out!

Update from Friends of DeReef Park (Submitted by Heather Templeton)

September 16th from 1:00 – 4:00.  Save the date.  The event is a partnership with Morris Brown AME and Charleston One Day of Peace.  The event will mainly be at Simonton Park and Cannon St. YMCA with a few other locations in between.    Our theme is “Neighborhood Revival – Party for Peace in the Parks”.   Please contact Heather Templeton for more information about the event – hhtempleton@gmail.com

Septima Clark Update (Submitted by City of Charleston)

The project update is coming a little earlier than usual to inform you of a change to the project that will begin the middle of next week.  Due to the many calls we have received from residents adjacent to and near the construction concerned about the noise and vibration from nighttime construction (9PM to 6AM), the contractor has submitted a traffic control plan to SCDOT to be able to perform daytime work along the northbound lane.  The plan was approved with certain provisions to ensure that work will be completed diligently to reduce the impact to motorists.

The plan consists of a long-term closure of the outside northbound lane beginning the week of July 23rd (pending completion of signage) and lasting approximately 6 weeks.  The lane closure will begin between Spring St and President St and will ultimately extend to Coming St.  Barrels will be used instead of concrete barriers so they can be easily moved or removed in case of a need for evacuation to allow for three full lanes in the northbound direction.  We are anticipating that traffic will be less affected by this lane closure than the previous closure.  It will not begin on the Ashley River Bridge like the previous one which will allow vehicles to exit onto Lockwood Blvd, Courtenay St, or Cannon St before the closure begins and motorist traveling south on US17 or east on I-26 should be largely unaffected.  Suggested alternate routes are posted on the project website at www.SeptimaClarkProject.com.

Work continues on the system at Coming St and on the curbing along the northbound lanes, which is past Bogard St by now.  Landscaping will be installed this week and next along the southbound lanes.

Potential planned closures for the next week include: Outside northbound lane from Spring St to Coming St (continuous) Up to two lanes in each direction on the Crosstown (nighttime only 8:30PM to 6AM) – Sunday night through Friday morning Coming St near the Crosstown (nighttime only 8:30PM to 6AM)
